How a literature in english session unfolds
The student starts by asking for the answer—and ends up solving the key step themselves.
- Student
In this unseen poem about an old Tiong Bahru kopitiam closing down, what does the poet mean by “the marble tables hold the rings of a hundred quiet mornings”? Can you write my paragraph?
- Tutor
I won’t write the paragraph for you, but we can build the close reading together. Look at the physical detail “rings” on the marble tables. What left those rings, literally?
- Student
Coffee cups left stains over the years, and “rings” also look like tree rings that mark age and time passing.
- Tutor
That double meaning — coffee stains and tree rings — is a sharp observation. Now look at the verb “hold” and the phrase “a hundred quiet mornings”: why does the poet say the tables *hold* those mornings rather than simply being stained by them?
- Student
Because the tables preserve the routine and shared memories of the neighbourhood regulars even as the shop is about to disappear.
- Tutor
You now have your Point, embedded quotation, diction analysis and emotional effect. Put those three sentences together and check that you name the metaphor explicitly.

How skill progress is recorded
Sessions build a clear skill record for the student and a calm, read-only summary for linked parents.
One bar per skill
Mastery is tracked skill by skill, not as a single subject percentage, so a strong topic cannot hide a weak one.
The hint level counts
Getting something right with one small hint moves the bar more than getting it right after five. The number we show you reflects how much help you needed.
Built from an event log
Every attempt, hint and explanation is recorded as an event, and the bars are calculated from that history. It can be replayed, which means the numbers are reproducible rather than asserted.
A parent sees the same numbers
A linked parent gets the same skill bars, the last judgement and its line of evidence behind each level, the recent session summaries and the flag counts — read-only, and nothing that is not also on your own pages.
8 skill bars, tracked independently
In literature in english, that means 8 separate skill bars — unseen poetry: speaker, situation, tone and shifts, writer’s craft: imagery, diction, metaphor and sound devices, poetic form, stanza structure, enjambment and caesura, and the rest — each updating based on verified problem steps. Linked parents see the same topic bars and session takeaways in read-only mode.
Literature in English FAQs
Common questions from students and parents about studying this subject on tutor.ai.
Does this cover both Pure Literature (2065) and Elective Literature (2263)?
Yes (in Beta for Sec 1–4 O-Level / SEC). The eight skills cover unseen poetry and prose close reading, writer’s craft (imagery, diction, tone, form and metre), set-text characterisation and drama staging, Passage-Based Questions (PBQ) and discursive literary essays.
Will the tutor write my unseen poetry analysis or PBQ essay for me?
Never. It asks you to isolate a specific line or dramatic moment, name the literary or dramatic technique, and explain how its connotation shapes the reader’s or audience’s response.
Can I upload an unseen poem or prose extract from my school WA or Prelim paper?
Yes — upload the PDF or a photo of the passage, and the tutor will walk through speaker, tone shifts, imagery and structure with you one stanza or paragraph at a time.
Why is Literature in English marked Beta?
Our core Socratic engine was validated first on Maths and Science. Literary close reading and open-ended essay evaluation are marked Beta while we benchmark rubric-specific prompts across set texts and unseen papers.
